GB Team rounds off the European Championships with Six Medals on Final Day

The GB Team ended a successful European Championship campaign with a flurry of medals on the final day, finishing the championships with 6 medals in able bodied and 3 medals in para classes.

Rebecca McGowan opened the medal winning on Friday taking her first medal in the +73kg category.

On Saturday, World Champion Bradly Sinden showed incredible form, successfully retaining his European Championship title, whilst Phoenix Goodman delivered a breakthrough performance to win her first senior major championship medal.

On retaining his European title, Bradly Sinden said “Happy to be back on the mat and put in some good performances. Retaining my European title was a bonus. I will take the learning back from this competition and focus on preparation for Paris 2024”.

On the final day of the championships, Caden Cunningham took his first European championship title winning the Gold medal against Spain. Jade Jones won her eighth European medal, and Aaliyah Powell won her first, both taking Silver.

Caden Cunningham on winning his first European Championship title “Very happy to win the Gold medal. It was a good opportunity to practise and showcase some skills I have been working on. I will be keeping up the training as I prepare for the Paris games.”

In the Para categories, World Champion Amy Truesdale added the European crown with a win in the final against Greece. Matt Bush and Joe Lane took Bronze, after some tough opposition against the USA and Azerbaijan respectively.

Amy commenting on her performance “I am delighted to have become European Champion. The championships also provided some valuable matches to help in my preparation for the Paralympic Games”.

Commenting on the championships, Performance Director Gary Hall said “This is an exceptional performance and results by the team, with a strong set of results in the Olympic and Paralympic categories that we will be contesting in Paris. Delighted for Caden Cunningham on winning his first major championship gold medal, alongside all other medallists, athletes, coaches and support team that contributed to this successful team result. It is great to be awarded as one of the top teams in Europe again, with Europe being one of the strongest continents for Taekwondo in the world.”
