Success for GB Taekwondo Athletes at the European Championships in Munich

GB Taekwondo Athletes delivered a strong performance at the European Championships in Munich, bringing home an impressive seven medal haul across Olympic and Paralympic categories.

Leading the charge was Caden Cunningham, who claimed European gold in the Men’s +87kg division and retained his title from 2024 with a commanding series of performances that showcased his power, composure, and tactical maturity. Cunningham’s victory continues his rise as one of Europe’s most exciting heavyweight talents.

It’s been a crazy start to the year for myself and my family, so I’m honestly just grateful to be alive and well and enjoying my sport. I fought today with a smile and enjoyed every moment, I genuinely appreciate all the support both here and at home.

In the Para competition, Amy Truesdale once again demonstrated why she remains one of the sport’s dominant athletes, securing her seventh European Gold in the K44 Female +65kg category. Truesdale’s consistency at the highest level continues to inspire the next generation of para-athletes, while reinforcing GB’s status as a leading nation in Para Taekwondo.

This is my 7th European title which is actually crazy when you think about it! So many athletes dream of achieving this once in their a career and I’ve gone on to do it seven times! Reflecting on this competition, I need to be more present, enjoy every moment… keep following the journey because there’s still plenty more to come!

Joining her at the top of the podium was Matt Bush, who also captured the third Gold medal, in the K44 Men’s +87kg division. Bush, who recently became a father again, produced a series of confident performances throughout the competition, adding another major European title to his growing list of achievements.

GB Taekwondo also celebrated another finalist, Lauren Williams, who battled her way to the Women’s +73kg final before earning a superb runner-up finish against home-nation favourite, Lorena Brandl. Her unique fighting style certainly brought the stadium to life, with roars from the crowd as split-second points continuously changed the direction of each round.

The team’s medal tally was further strengthened with three bronze medal performances. Rebecca Sinden (nee McGowan), fresh from her wedding to Tokyo medallist Bradly Sinden, secured bronze in the Women’s -73kg category after a strong tournament campaign. Meanwhile Matthew Howell delivered an impressive performance to take Bronze in the Men’s -68kg division, a notoriously difficult category.

Jodie McKew rounded off the podium finishes with Bronze in the Women’s -53kg category, continuing her development on the senior international circuit.

The results represent another major milestone for GB Taekwondo as athletes build momentum ahead of the 2026 Grand Prix series, which marks the beginning of the qualification process for LA 2028.

The European Championships provided a great test for the team, ahead of the Grand Prix series, which kicks off in Rome at the beginning of June. We were strict on the selection criteria for the Championship, taking a team with a clear purpose. Of the ten athletes selected to compete, seven came away with a medal. It was particularly encouraging to see Matthew and Jodie making a championship podium for the first time. We hope that this performance will give them the confidence to push on in their careers.

The performances in Munich highlighted not only the talent within the squad, but also the collective determination, resilience, and ambition that continues to drive GB Taekwondo forward on the European and world stage.
